Why Being Awkward in Front of the Camera is Perfectly Fine
The prospect of posing for photos can be intimidating for many. Whether you're camera-shy or feel awkward striking a pose, it's essential to remember that authenticity is far more captivating than perfection. If you find yourself worrying about being awkward in front of the camera, here's why you should embrace it rather than stress about it.
This session was shot at Wolfe's Neck State Park, Freeport, Maine
Real Moments, Real Memories:
Authenticity is the key to creating lasting memories. Feeling awkward in front of the camera often means you're being genuine and true to yourself. Those candid, unposed moments capture the real you and become cherished memories that tell your unique story.
Professional Guidance:
Experienced photographers know how to work with individuals who may feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. They are skilled at creating a relaxed and friendly environment that allows you to be yourself. Trust in their expertise, and you'll likely find that the camera captures your natural charm effortlessly.
Berkley and Liv were doing a mini-roadtrip in New England and made Maine one of their stops. Berkley found me on Instagram, and we chatted on there for awhile before she ended up booking me. Because they hadn't ever visited Maine before, they were unsure about locations, so I sent them my southern Maine location guide to review to help them choose. They ended up picking Wolfe's Neck State Park! They did outfits: one more dressier and the second more casual and what they both would typically wear everyday.
Everyone Feels It:
You're not alone in feeling awkward in front of the camera. Many people, even those you see in glossy magazines or on social media, have moments of unease during photoshoots. It's a common experience, and acknowledging it can help alleviate the pressure you may be putting on yourself.
Imperfections Tell a Story:
Perfection is overrated. Embracing your awkward moments allows for a more authentic representation of yourself. Your quirks, genuine smiles, and unique expressions tell a story that is far more interesting and relatable than a perfectly posed image.
Your Photographer is on Your Team:
Your photographer is not there to judge you; they are there to capture your best self. Establish open communication with them about any concerns or insecurities you may have. A supportive photographer will guide you through the process, making it an enjoyable and stress-free experience.
Berkley and Liv kept telling me even before we met that they were both super awkward in front of the camera! I assured them that there was absolutely no need to worry, and that they certainly weren't the first clients to feel that way, nor would the be the last. I comforted them by letting them know that they should treat their session as more of a date that they're on, one that would have me trailing behind photographing! I gave them only 2-3 prompts, like walking and holding hands, running, bumping hips while walking, etc. - just really simple prompts they could do with little to no pressure of actually posing a certain way. These prompts always lead to a lot of natural laughter, making for genuine photos! They felt even more comfortable during their second outfit in their jeans and sweatshirts because that's what they said they typically wear everyday, so it genuinely felt like just another day to them, but one they were having photographed. So if you're worried about posing or being awkward, your photographer (me!) will be there to guide you with prompts that feel natural and normal to you. I also spent extra time chatting with Berkley online before the shoot, so she really felt like she knew me before she met me which made her feel even more at ease. It's always my priority to feel like a friend as well as being your photographer. Oh - and they loved the photos after because they said they "felt like them"!
Laughter is the Best Pose:
Laughter is a universal language, and genuine smiles are the most beautiful. If you feel awkward, don't be afraid to laugh it off. Candid moments of laughter often result in some of the most heartwarming and natural photos.
It's About the Experience:
Remember that a photoshoot is not just about the final images; it's about the experience itself. Embrace the opportunity to have fun, express yourself, and create memories. The more you focus on enjoying the moment, the less you'll worry about how you appear in the photos.
Self-Love Matters:
Perceive yourself through a lens of self-love. Accepting and embracing your perceived "awkwardness" as a unique part of who you are fosters a positive self-image. Celebrate your individuality, and let that shine through in your photos.
Feeling awkward in front of the camera is entirely normal, and it's a part of what makes you authentically you. By embracing your uniqueness and trusting in the expertise of your photographer, you'll discover that being yourself in front of the camera is not just okay—it's perfect.
