Acadia + Maine Photography frequently asked questions

Coming to Acadia or Maine for your engagement, surprise proposal, elopement, or wedding but have a few questions? Keep reading!

What if the weather is bad?

My most asked question! The weather in Maine changes pretty frequently from week to week and even day to day, so don’t stress out too much if you’re looking at the forecast a week in advance and it’s predicting bad weather! If not-so-ideal weather (heavy rain or unsafe weather conditions) is predicted for the time of your session, my first solution is to just move your session to a different time in the day when the weather looks a little better. I’m super flexible! If that isn’t possible due to my own schedule or yours, then I will fit you into my schedule the best that I can if we need to move it to the day before or after! However, I can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to keep your same time slot.

Cloudy skies, foggy weather, and even a little bit of a drizzle still make for great photos, and honestly, some of my favorite photos I’ve taken were shot during those conditions! Although I hope for dreamy lighting and colorful skies for your sunrise or sunset session, there is no guarantee of that, and lack of any of those elements does not permit a rescheduling. I always say that your photos will be perfect regardless of what the weather decides to do!

The Weather app is my most used app on my phone, so I’ll be watching the forecast closely the days leading up to our session together and let you know in advance if we need to consider changing the time or date!

I’m super awkward in front of the camera - can you help?

Probably my second most asked question! I love guiding my clients through their photo sessions with me, so if you’re unsure about how to pose, I’ll be there to help you out! My philosophy is: “focus on the people, not the poses" which means that I’m there to document you exactly as you are in the moment, not how you’re posing! I will prompt you every now and again, but for the most part, you won’t even notice that I’m there, and you (and your loved one) can focus on being present.

I’ve never been to Acadia or Maine, can you help me choose a location?

Absolutely! If you let me know some of your location preferences (by the water, lots of trees, at the beach, etc.) then I can offer location suggestions unique to what you’re looking for. Or, if you don’t have any preferences, I can suggest my personal favorite spots, and ones that are popular with previous clients. In addition, I’ll suggest locations based on time of day, since some locations get better views of sunrise or sunset than the others. You can also view my suggested locations in my “Locations” tab at the top of this page!

I’m trying to plan out my day but have no idea where or how to start, can you help me with an itinerary?

One of my favorite parts about photographing elopements and weddings (as well as longer sessions) is the ability to create timelines for my clients! After photographing hundreds of elopements, weddings, and sessions in Acadia and throughout Maine, I have gotten really good at timing how much time we need to spend at certain locations, how long the drive is from one spot to another, etc.. I also love helping brides and grooms-to-be create elopement and wedding timelines unique their day! Unsure of how long you should allocate for getting ready photos? The first look? Group photos? No problem - I can help with that! I’ll create a timeline for you based on the time of your ceremony, if you’re doing getting ready photos, if you’re doing a first look, the start of your reception, etc., and then you can tweak it as necessary!

If you’re still unsure whether or not you want to do various events on your wedding day, are trying to decide different locations inside Acadia, or are still deciding what time to hold your ceremony at to make sure you can fit in all the photos you want, I can draft sample timelines for you to view to help you visualize what your day could look like to help you decide!

What should I wear? How many outfits can I bring?

Another great question! In general, I suggest wearing something comfortable that you can move in - I like to incorporate a lot of movement in my sessions, so wear something you can do that in! I also suggest wearing flat shoes, or shoes with a low or chunky heel. Most locations I shoot at have relatively easy terrain to walk in, but I still recommend wearing comfortable shoes that you can walk in over the rocks, grass, dirt, etc.

More specifically, flowy dresses/skirts work well but anything too oversized won't photograph as nice as it looks - you'll lose shape in the final photos! I'd also try to avoid patterns with more than 3 colors as it can be distracting in photos. Or if you're not the dress/skirt type, then anything that you might wear for a casual date night will work great! As for casual outfits, think movie night date vibes - jeans and a nice blouse! For gentlemen, I'd recommend a nice pair of chinos/casual shorts or pants with a nice button shirt! Color wise, earth tones photograph really well as well as any muted colors! I've found that different shades of blue photograph amazingly well, too! Most couples usually pick one color and wear different shades of that color or complementary colors!

Also, feel free to bring an outfit change as I have a portable changing tent you can use! I typically recommend bringing one "dressier" option and one more casual option! Most clients do 1-2 outfit changes, but feel free to do more than that!
